Fire Ratings -Frames

Is there a difference in a fire rated Timely frame and a non-rated frame?
With the exception of the fire label there is no difference. The only difference is that we apply the required fire label.

If a customer orders a single swing labelled frame with no strike prep, what must we include and why?
A labeled frame with no strike prep will require a TA-12 reinforcement plate. Since all labeled frames must be self-latching, the absence of a strike prep indicates the use of a rim panic device. The TA-12 is the required reinforcement for a rim panic device strike. Please also note that when a door closer is used instead of spring hinges, then a regular arm or parallel arm closer reinforcement is also required.

What is the maximum fire rating on our frame if wood casing is used?
Our DOOR frame is fire rated up to 90 minutes with either steel, PVC, aluminum or wood casing. The casing material does not compromise the fire rating except in glazed openings. On glazed openings (sidelites, borrowed lites and transoms) steel, PVC or aluminum casing can be use. Wood casing is allowed on sidelites or borrowed lites for 20 minutes without vertical or horizontal mullions in glass area.

If the wall is one hour, what label must we put on our frame?
20 minute is typical, however, always check code requirements.

If the wall is two hour, what label must we put on our frame?
90 minute as stated in the UBC.

Why do lighter gauge frames perform better in fire tests?
Because of the light gauge steel, heat transference from one side of the frame to the other is much quicker, therefore eliminating the twisting you might get with heavier gauge frames.

Does Timely have a reference number for International Conference of Building Officials (I.C.B.O.)?
No, Warnock Hersey (our testing people, which we are licensed under) is listed with them, therefore the customer may call Warnock Hersey for the number.

If a customer has a fire rated frame with steel casing installed, and wants to remove casing, clips and smash the tabs flat for wood casing, is our frame still fire rated?
Yes, because we can label a DOOR frame with wood casing. The frame must be installed to meet all requirements.

Does Timely have an "STC" rating?
No, but consult factory for information.
