PREFINISHED STEEL DOOR FRAMES

 

This section includes prefinished, shop fabricated, site assembled steel door frames, fire rated and non-rated types, for exterior and interior applications.  This section includes performance, proprietary, and descriptive type specifications.  Edit to avoid conflicting requirements.

PART 1           GENERAL

1.4                                      SUBMITTALS FOR REVIEW

Do not request submittals if drawings sufficiently describe the products of this section or if proprietary specifying techniques are used. The following submittals are intended for review and approval or other action by the Consultant.  Include product data only if required to supplement shop drawing information.

A.                 Section 01300:  Submission procedures.

B.                 Product Data:  Indicate frame configuration and finishes.

C.                 Shop Drawings:  Indicate frame elevations, reinforcement required, and spacing, location of embosses for hardware, and finish.

Include the following paragraph for submission of physical samples for selection of finish, color, and texture.

D.                 Samples:  Submit [two] [_______] standard frame samples, illustrating factory finished frame colors and surface texture.

1.5                                      SUBMITTALS FOR INFORMATION

The following submittals are informational; responsive action by the Consultant is not required.

1.6                                      QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.                 Installers:

1.                   Individuals that are “Certified Prefinished Frame Installers” for the installation of site assembled door frames.

2.                   Refer to manufacturer’s Internet web site for listing of Certified installers.

1.7                                      REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

One or more of the following standards must be selected as applicable to fire rated doors, as appropriate to authority having jurisdiction.

A.                 Fire Rated Frame Construction:  Conform to [ASTM E152] [NFPA 252] [UL 10B and 10C].

B.                 Installed Frame Assembly:  Conform to [NFPA 80] [_________] for fire rated class same as fire door.

1.8                                      DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND PROTECTION

A.                 Section 01600:  Transport, handle, store, and protect products in a dry area off the ground.

B.                 Accept frames on site in manufacturer's box packaging with identification labels intact.  Inspect for damage.

C.                 Do not open individual boxes until installation is to begin.

1.9                                      PROJECT CONDITIONS

A.                 Section 01300:  Coordination and meetings.

B.                 Verify actual measurements/openings by field measurement prior to fabrication.

C.                 Coordinate the work with frame opening construction, door and hardware installation.

Include the following paragraph if electronic hardware components are contained within the door and frame construction.

D.                 Sequence installation to ensure concealed electric wire connections are achieved in an orderly and expeditious manner.

PART 2                      PRODUCTS

2.1                                      FRAME MANUFACTURERS

In this article, list the manufacturers acceptable for this project. Edit the subsequent descriptive specifications to identify project requirements and to eliminate any conflict with specified manufacturer's products.

2.2                                      FRAMES

Timely door frame throat openings accommodate up to 330 mm (13 inch) wall thicknesses.  Specify the throat opening in the paragraph below, or simply a match to the wall thickness.

Select appropriate casing from the list below.  Casings may require reference to other sections for more detail.  Profiles of casings may be required.

2.3                                      ACCESSORIES

Specify rim panic strike reinforcement for single frames not prepared for strikes.

B.                 Reinforcement Brackets for Rim Exit Device:  Model TA-12

Specify weatherstripping or silencers in this section or refer to another Section – select the first or second option as described in each paragraph below.

2.4                                      FABRICATION

B.                 Sidelights [and Borrowed Lites] with Steel Trim: [_____][45 minute fire rated].

B.                 Frames for Exterior Units:   Electro Galvanized Prefinished with factory applied impact resistant, polyester baked enamel finish.

C.                 Casing: 

1.                   Steel:  Prefinished with factory applied impact resistant, polyester baked enamel finish.

2.                   Aluminum:  [Prefinished with factory applied impact resistant, polyester baked enamel finish.] [Clear anodized.]

3.                   PVC:  Finished to match the frame color.

D.                 Primer:  Primer Electro Galvanized.

PART 3                      EXECUTION

3.1                                      EXAMINATION

A.                 Section 01700:  Verify acceptability of existing conditions before starting work.

B.                 Verify that opening sizes and tolerances are acceptable.

3.2                                      INSTALLATION

A.                 Install frames in accordance with manufacturer’s requirements.

B.                 Install Prefinished frames near end of the project after completing wall painting and wall coverings.

C.                 Install frames using Certified Installers.

D.                 Coordinate installation of glass and glazing in glazed units.

E.                  Coordinate installation of frames with installation of hardware specified in Section [08710] [________] and doors in Section [08114.] [08210.] [________.]

F.                  Touch-up blemishes on finished frames.

3.3                                      SCHEDULE

Provide schedule when door and frame schedules are not described on drawings.  The schedule should identify various types or categories of doors and associated frames, fire ratings if any, hardware sets, etc.
